SHADE TREE PLACE (Davis/Coleman) I need a place, a shade tree place I need a place a new cool waterhole I need a place, a shade tree place A sanctuary for my very soul I need a place where I can go I need a place, a shade tree place I need a place where the swallows swoop low I need a place, a shade tree place Today it seems such a long way, Way down the road I need a place where I can go Something there, inside of me, Is trying to wake me up Something there, is shaking my shoulders to see The rocks and the trees and the centipede Land o land, you keep calling to me, Come and sit with me a while Land o land, you keep calling to me, To rest in the grace with the lorikeet I need a place, a shade tree place I need a place a new cool waterhole I need a place, a shade tree place I need a place where the swallows swoop low I need a place where I can go I need a place where I can go I need a place where I can go from “A Sanctuary of Soul” – Noel Davis The Heart Waking 2007 p17

Silence Bares Me (Davis/Coleman) Silence bares me to my soul Her touch arouses me to being one with you One with life’s Song of Songs O soul of my being, beloved of my solitude You are my sleeping, waking, rising Dancing healing You are my sleeping, waking, rising Dancing healing When you wake in me, my heart breaks into dance O Life of every moment – o heart of my blooming When you wake in me, my heart breaks into dance O Life of every moment – o heart of my blooming from “O Soul of my being Heart of my blooming” – Noel Davis The Heart Waking 2007 p11

Rainbow In A Smile (Davis/Coleman) The healing touch of a word A volume in a syllable of silence Life in a breath of stillness A journey in a pause A symphony in a single note Poetry in a brush stroke Joy in a moment of intimacy And tears that just take us by surprise Like a rainbow in a smile A rainbow in a smile Takes me by surprise Holy beating drum With songs that only you can strum Blinding blooms of our poetry Sprout without a single word An ocean in a pot of tea It took a long time to realize that for me But now at the closing of play Those little things are taking me away Like a rainbow in a smile A rainbow in a smile A rainbow in a smile from “Little things, living springs” – Noel Davis Together at the Edge 2011 p155

Listen to the Birds (Clemens) Listen to the birds – listen to the birds They do not care for the troubles of my mad world No they do not care – for the troubles Listen to the birds – listen to the birds They have no concern – for my yesterday or my tomorrows I only wish I could sing like them Listen to the birds – listen to the birds Their songs ring out – in the evening light Through the trees and across the night Listen to the birds – listen to the birds They do not care for the troubles of my mad world No they do not care – for the troubles For the troubles – for the troubles

At Home With You (Davis/Coleman) At home with you – I’m at home with you In the laughter of kookaburra, listening to crow In the solitude of eagle, the mighty ocean flow In the voyage of night, I’m in the wake of the moon I’m at home, with you At home with you, I’m at home with you In the glow of the morning, the palette of the tide In the roll of the lowland, the mountain that divides It’s in the spirit of wild, it’s in the scent of the gum I’m at home with you At home with you, I’m at home with you In the taste of dry, the smell of rain The run of wind, the grin of flame The sweat of climb, the shady way The ooze of swamp inside decay It’s in the little pause I make To listen awhile, to this land in my blood Where I come from At home with you – I’m at home with you I’m at home with you – I’m at home with you from “This Land in my Blood” – Noel Davis From the Wilds of the Heart 2003 p13

Come Christmas (Davis/Coleman) Come Christmas - in a barn Come Christmas – in a shed A basement a box - a cell heavy locks A tunnel - a trench - razor wire Heavy fire Come Christmas – on a bench Come Christmas – a hospital tent Beneath the star – outside a bar Behind a tree by the river You are delivered Come Christmas – across the sea Come Christmas – where have you been? O come little light – you swell up so bright Lift up the hearts of the mothers And every lover Love irrepressible burst through the black Kaleidoscopic flowers grow where burning bridges crack Wonderful dawning – child of the morning Our holy family has delivered We’ve crossed the river Love irrepressible - wellspring of light Come now - illuminate this dark Wonderful dawning – child of the morning Our holy family has delivered We’ve crossed the river Come Christmas … come Christmas Come Christmas … come Christmas from “Love Irrepressible” – Noel Davis From the Wilds of the Heart 2003 p81

On You Go (Bush Beatitudes) (Davis/Coleman) There are narrow roads of invitation That lead us to the virgin lands of God And we who dare, we can take them And stumble and slide and slip though we may Making new tracks through unknown Learning the bush skills as we go And the angels at our side say “On you go!” On you go – on you go – on you go – on you go This narrow track of invitation Says travel light and be gentle as you go And share the swag with this hungry country And dig deep to forgive the ones who’ve hurt you most And as you camp by the billabong Let the campfire make you strong And hear the angels at your side say “On you go!” On you go – on you go – on you go – on you go And as you camp by the billabong Let the campfire make you strong And hear the angels at your side say “On you go!” On you go – on you go – on you go – on you go On you go – on you go – on you go – on you go. And hear the angels at your side say “On you go.” from “Bush Beatitudes” – Noel Davis Campfire of the Heart 1994 p82
